Sharepoint by Microsoft could be described as a “jack of all trades / master of none”.

While Microsoft sales have fell for the first time in history, Sharepoint has climbed.

The software can be used to build websites, as content management for those websites, as a business intelligence tool for corporate business, as a collaboration tool to share files and documents within teams and more. Microsoft admits that it can’t do everything, nor does it compete with specialized programs that focus on one particular field. It nevertheless is a good business tool that is highly adaptable and gaining popularity. Supposedly Sharepoint had exceeded te 1 billion dollar mark last year, which was cause for quite some celebration.

Microsoft has even found a way to compete against rival open source technologies by offering a free license to anyone running MS Server.
